when we turned left onto Leenan Gardens
all of your neighbours
many of them friends from half a lifetime ago
stood in their doorways
some cried
all paid their respects
as we passed your house
i was overcome with old memories of
marching up west way against winter rain
your hand holding mine tightly
keeping me close
protecting me and teaching me as we walked
crows cawed through your lessons
your wisdom and words
all got through to me
tales of barges and factories
while turf smoke
sneaked from chimneys
other days
crayons and pages
all was good
wheaten bread scones
baked in an old oven
hot soup on sick days
my last day on the road with kathleen
all may's chorus of birds sing their songs
nature revealing that life must go on
you taught me that too...
