Where the mountains fall, ellipses -
the waves of rock pound the beach
in slow cascade.
She wants more than this,
more than a quaking of earth,
the sound of soil on wood
and waving handkerchiefs.
She wants the beating of drums,
the turning back of time.
She wants the void.
She wonders, 'Is it always so
for mothers and wives?'
But the thought evades solidity
and she is drawn back
into the hollowness of reaching.
