This is a superb collection of poetry by Catherine, some of which I am already familiar with, and others that have entertained or made me think on people or the nature of all things. I'm a huge fan of her writing and have benefitted greatly from her editing skills on my own poetry and short stories over the last few years here on Sensitize ©. In the covering pages of Wormwood, Earth and Honey there is even a quote from the review I composed for her last book, the novel; The Sand In The Painting. That really made me smile

I have found myself going back to several of the poems in Wormwood, Earth and Honey already. I have also read the other reviews on Catherine's website and agree that her writing is delightful and multi-layered. I would say what stands out for me is the comedy (in some). The depth, quality and/or quirkiness of each piece also holds me captivated. So, like a good CD, film or story that can be heard, watched or read over and over again, pleasure is added to with each reading of Wormwood, Earth and Honey by Catherine Edmunds.

Launch Report
I arrived at the Town Hall in good time, with Ian (hubby) in tow to carry books etc. Everything was already set up – all I had to do was pile the books and painting onto the table and smile sweetly at people as they started to trickle in about half an hour later. Gillian Wales, the Town Hall manager, was there all the time to ensure smooth running.
It’s funny, but I thought that most of the people I ‘know’ live either on the other side of the world (internet folk) or in faraway places like Kent and Sussex, but it turns out that I must know a few locals, because I reckon of the thirty odd people who turned up, there was only one I didn’t recognise. I’ve no idea who she was, but she took exception to my comment that people who write should also read. She said afterwards that she takes care not to read anything, in case it influences her writing. I didn’t really have an answer to that, other than to try not to let my jaw drop too far.
Peter Walters, novelist and leader of the Wear Valley Writers gave me a brief and very complimentary introduction, during which I have to admit to a touch of nerves – but then it was my turn to speak and the nerves mercifully evaporated. Those of you who’ve met me will know that in social situations I tend to be reticent (if not downright bloody shy) although on forums I can be quite forthright. I’ve now discovered that the ‘public speaking’ me is the same person as the forum me. I loved having a captive and polite audience who were there to listen to Me! Me! Me! *ahem*.
So, what did I talk about? I started off with brief biographical stuff about my background in music and sudden switch to writing. I talked about how the writing started, and the grotty poetry I wrote at first. I explained my views on what makes bad poetry really bad, giving a few examples and referencing the famed writethis.com ‘banned words’ list. I talked about the people who made me realise what you have to do in order to avoid the pitfalls, and how I learnt to do it ‘properly’, mostly through the influence of people like the late great ‘bru’ from msn group The Blank Slate. I talked about how my novel “The Sand in the Painting” came to be written and published. I described the different types of publishers – and how to avoid being ripped off by scams like poetry.com. I lauded the legitimate small presses to the skies.
I then moved onto the poems – I’d picked out about eight of them from the book to be read out by fellow author Mary from the writing group, so I had a rest while she read them, though I gave brief introductions to each. We ended the readings with ‘little piggies’ which always gets a laugh. I asked if there were any questions, and there were quite a few, many of them interesting, and all of them (thank heavens) answerable.
Then it was onto the (free) wine and the book signing. Ian acted as treasurer, and I signed and watched the piles of books go down. A good feeling. Afterwards, I chatted to the people who’d come – friends, relations, my art teacher, other artists, ex-colleagues from the music business, writers – and, to my delight, three people from internet writing forums who I’d never met in the flesh before (Joss and Mattspop from Slingink, and Ack from creativewriters/spiritnet/etc.).
Finally we packed up the remaining books, and lurched over to Wetherspoons for a pint of Black Sheep with the artists, where I managed to sell another book to a complete stranger.
I’m posting this report on a few sites, so some of these thank yous won’t mean much to everyone, but here we go:
Thank you Jeff from creativewriters for the invaluable advice on press releases. As a result of using your formula, I managed seven pieces in various newspapers in the run-up to the launch.
Thank you everyone who’s ever critiqued a piece of work of mine – there are hundreds of you and it would be invidious to pick out any one name, other than bru and Nigel and bfgg and danimik and – so many more – but without online critique, I wouldn’t have discovered the unbeatable buzz one can get from writing (quite apart from the rather pleasant aspect of earning money).
Most of all, thank you Kay Green of Earlyworks Press / Circaidy Gregory Press for boundless enthusiasm, support, critique, editing, proofreading, friendship and all round brilliance.

as promised, here i am giving further feedback on your experiences at the launch of your book of poetry; wormwood, earth and honey.
hopefully you will have made a few good contacts and furthered potential sales. i would have to say that the best part for me was reading about you finding your public voice when speaking to an audience. that is something priceless and a genuine treasure. you do realise that this may inspire the 'performance poet' in you? nowt wrong wae that ...
i positively loved your description of the encounter with the non-reader/writer. they're everywhere that lot. all of them leading what must be lives of desperation, not allowing themselves to become inspired. my belief is that a writer must read material by other writers, if only to find a prompt to the direction within. there is of course a flipside to this in that the writer can be negatively inspired at times e.g; me. for absolutely ages after reading books by martin dillon about the conflict over here, all i could do was compose what to others must have looked like frequently angry rants/streams of political consciousness. however, out of it came a resolution to a certain extent and a highway through to a place within that was calm and creative about all that happened here. so in reality, a positive experience when followed through to conclusion. for a writer to say that they don't read therefore absorb the artistic direction of the world around them is just silly. my jaw would have hit the floor if confronted with someone saying this too...
i pm'd you earlier about the book launch and about arts management on here. i also asked if you would be interested in copy/pasting your book launch experiences over to the catherine edmunds' experience (nterview) section. i'm begging you now lol ...

Yes, you're right. Writers who don't read are like composers who don't listen to music or artists who avoid art galleries. They are people who not only have not found their own voice; they are afraid to find their own voice.

i will indeed acknowledge michael hope for the photography and your lovely self for the online graphic editing
. i'm sure by now you're aware that sensitize works best on the principles of creative chaos and people power. the more people putting a bit of effort in are acknowledged for it, the better and faster the artistic and creative energies, or synergies are propelled through humanity.
i don't consider this a god, but i do consider all spiritual experiences to be seated in as yet sparcely placed pockets of higher emotional awareness. basically, out of reach for most people due to the stresses of having to conform constantly to an ever-switching, cunning, taxing, ruling few enemies of creativity within the world.
my aim is to create so much of this synergy through sensitize that the fabric of the cosmos is hummed to, touched and inspired to relax and give humanity much more.
bit like getting honey from a beehive.
again; an organic parapsychological encounter, but one i believe will heal us all from the sicknesses of elitism, famine, greed and war. those activists, artistics and creatives channeling this synergy into collaborative creative works through sensitize will shine a bit brighter in the eyes of the regular non-creatives.
they in turn will be inspired to dabble creatively themselves a bit more, love a bit more, open up a bit more, maybe even buy screenprints, mugs, vases, calendars and other stationery with the sensitize active member's/participant's work and www.upstaterenegadeproductions.com logo/s on them, made by activists, artists, potterers, fabricians, photographers. sculptors, producers and writers etc sponsoring/working through sensitize, just to say thank you to us all for a job-well-done ...
they could buy these gifts as tokens of love for their loved ones and we could distribute all profits after material, maintainance, stationery, telecommunications bills and upgrade capabilities, equipment, material, hospitalities and travel costs are accounted for. the profits will be equally shared out to charities like autism awareness, amnesty international (irrepressible info) and other charities that either diarmuid, you, me and the other original members of this community represent or respect. or other causes and charities that the current core active group of sensitize members come to respect through full inspection and interaction.
this in turn creates an ever increasing field of creativity/synergy which i personally believe artistic types will become subliminally triggered to be super-creative through witnessing in/with their synergetic insight/inner-eye. this will unleash their artistic flows and summon forth the muse/tulpa/babylonian. anarchist, organic and parapsychological, maybe even a wee bit spiritual i know, but it feels right and i think you may agree. i reckon argie, diarmuid, (kay), mike and tim would too...
even if you don't, t'iz all good material for discussion threads in the future, innit

this in turn creates an ever increasing field of creativity/synergy which i personally believe artistic types will become subliminally triggered to be super-creative through witnessing in/with their synergetic insight/inner-eye. this will unleash their artistic flows and summon forth the muse/tulpa/babylonian. anarchist, organic and parapsychological, maybe even a wee bit spiritual i know, but it feels right and i think you may agree. i reckon argie, diarmuid, (kay), mike and tim would too...
