Thank you for taking the time out to respond Sal :) ...

I agree with your points on the rulers of countries, their 'security' staff/military machines and cliqué of supporters. For censorship to truly have an effect, it must be imposed by what would appear to any genuine opponent of a brutal school of thought/regime to be a force or wall of condecension and derision at the very least. Mayhem and murder always looming and controlled by the state. It would be an easy task then to keep up a continued censoring or hostile front. Any time anyone opposed to their policies/schools of thought/regime spoke out, the tireless and unending force or wall of contempt would move to counter-attack (if attack is the right terminology to use when describing anyone exercising freedom of speech).
Argie wrote:To my humble opinion, censorhip is the very last resource that coward, cruel or incompetent rulers, or a mixture of these heinous attributes, impose their societies' media to get away with government sins against democracy, once all other criteria proved useless,
That's debatable to a certain extent though Sal. Sometimes censorship can be the only device necessary when run in tandem with accounts of prior brutalities by a ruling force/military regime. Basically fear-mongering. Don't we see this on several television news channels daily? I'm not sure what things are like in Argentina where you live currently, but we are being herded towards sheer terror of anyone who may be an Islamic extremist or hold views contrary to those being projected by the ruling elite. If enough people believe they will suffer by opposing the 'state' and those 'governing' them and continually lying to them, or speak out in any way, military enforcement will become more and more commonplace. Media will cover more and more items where the ordinary everyday things of life become less and less important as we are all bombarded with security alerts and footage of 'our' militaries 'doing-a-fine-job' protecting us. What ends up playing out is a powerlessness and silent, weary population living under real and state run/sanctioned terrorism.
Argie wrote:say keep VAT inspectors 'living' at the offender's premises; scrutinise the offenders' past life to disclose to public whatever findings are discovered; put a light to offenders' homes in the middle of one subzero winter night, preferably with its sleeping occupants inside or, as a last resource, physically eliminating by sword and mantle, or via a prepared 'accident', whatever remaining chunk of oppositon they may have, that had obviously passed unscathed all previous instances. When neither of the above prove useful, these rulers close the book and try with another book describing the deeds of a short-moustached German corporal of the late thirties and very early fourties who, apparently, had a fearful collection of easy recipes which he used to keep all German citizens at first, and later half the world's, under his high, bloodstained black patent leather boots.
So many manouvres implimented to keep those without power; 'without power.' Our lives becoming more frequently lived either under the heel of our governments or the preposterous notion that they care about us. They don't and most of them also know that even their 'democratically elected' have careers that run for such a short period of time that they cram in as many exercises in control as they can, more in a bid to sop up the time and resources of whoever is next 'democratically elected.' Swings and roundabouts...
Argie wrote:We're used to watch the performance of these 'tactics' in Argentina, and it is perhaps the deep knowledge we've learnt about our rulers' foul play that 'my humble opinion' should I've rather given its true name, i.e. Dreadful Experience Of A Common Citizen.

Cheers :P
My point exactly Sal. Censorship is the ability of a government, its military machine and indeed if one reads the rest of this thread above, even supposedly oppositional media activists, campaigners and groups (probably on their payroles) so comfortable that to move and oppose any ruling elite properly or speak out for the 'common citizen' would be a pointless act to begin with. Thus furthering the censorship of entire populations of 'common citizens'/individuals.

Thanks dude :) ...

BLOODY SUNDAY

As soon as you've read the title above you imagined what would my next move be, didn't you?

Was BS an act of censorhip? You should know beter than most... :(

Sorry to disturb you but I feel it was one of the fiercest acts to cut down with a public expression of discomfort.

Well, it was a definite censorship of the lives of the people murdered by the British army that day. A censorship of the families and friends of the victims too. They were never going to have good times or further memories to celebrate of those people who were shot. I would say post traumatic stress disorder and unending grief were what most of them faced. Then of course there is still the ongoing campaign for justice and truth about Bloody Sunday. Britain still has to openly admit and apologise / compensate all those affected. Until then there is the censorship brought about by a lack of faith in the British legal system.

Following the events of Bloody Sunday and the later years when I was young and growing up here there was also a more sinister or subliminal form of censorship. That of the silence of self-censorship. Frequently we had to 'mind our p's and q's' when in public. Many employers were from more affluent backgrounds and identified as 'British'. Being vocal against the British military or the RUC (the former sectarian police service of Northern Ireland) could have resulted in a loss of employment. Then of course there was always the very real risk that if we became vocal to the point of 'taking to the streets' there was the danger we would be shot at by the army or police. So, frustrations mounted and silence festered.

These days things have changed. There are more and more Irish employers in Northern Ireland. American companies like Seagate operate out of Derry, but sadly Raytheon are also here. Raytheon are a company who make software for the guidance systems of missiles. A while back some activists marched on Ratheon and gained access to the building. They have become known as the Raytheon 9. They held a siege and destroyed computers that may have contained the data to design / guide these missiles. The upshot of this was that the PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) arrested and held them under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. I believe this charge was later reduced to criminal damage, but the Prevention of Terrorism Act too is a form of censorship in that it denies the arrested person the right to appeal for compensation or legal costs if proved innocent. It will be interesting to see how this one pans out and whether all charges are dropped. One of those arrested is a well known activist, campaigner, columnist, journalist, SWP (Socialist Workers Party) politician and writer; Eamonn McCann.

Imagining Argentina / Madres de Plaza de Mayo...

Post by Louis P. Burns aka Lugh »

I watched a brilliant 2003 movie directed by Christopher Hampton this weekend called; Imaging Argentina adapted from a novel by Lawrence Thornton, starring Antonio Banderas and Emma Thompson. I now have a fuller understanding of the nightmare visited upon your people between 1976 and 1983. I would really welcome any poetry, thoughts or writing you may have on this time in your history Sal.

In the film Emma Thompson plays Cecilia Rueda, a journalist who speaks out against many of the government's injustices being carried out on Argentinian people. As a result she becomes one of The Disappeared. She is taken in broad daylight from the home she shares with her daughter Teresa Rueda and husband Carlos Rueda (Banderas) a theatre owner/musician. She is interrogated, raped and further tortured by several soldiers 'guarding' her.

All the time she is away Carlos Rueda has visions of what she is enduring. He also has insight into the fate of many of the other Disappeared and gives their families and loved ones details on where they are, when they will return or indeed if they will return at all. Spies are sent to infiltrate the meetings where he shares these visions and gives hope. To further his torment his daughter is also taken and disappeared. There is a heart-breaking scene set in Plaza de Mayo, Buenos Aries as he marches with the Mothers of the Disappeared when he realises or sees what has happened to his daughter. His psychic gift or insight a metaphor of the 'truth' which will never be erased and will always be known in the minds of people who went through this.

In the end credits of Imagining Argentina there are totals (at 2003) of people both in Argentina and other countries where fascist governments and their paramilitary armed thugs/secret police/soldiers have taken or 'Disappeared' people. I considered the kidnapped victims currently being illegally detained in Guantanamo Bay under the Extraordinary Rendition program, the victims of Internment and H-Block in Northern Ireland's recent history under British military rule and all those who faced the horrors of the concentration camps run by the Nazis.

While composing this post I visited a few links in a bid to further understand what happened in Argentina;-

Project Disappeared

The Vanished Gallery

BBC News: 'Disappeared' mass grave found in Argentina
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/713996.stm

All of these people are victims of censorship because the various governments of the world would rather deride, jail, murder, silence or take (disappear) them, their art, journalism and their voices, than comply with basic civil and human rights which embrace equality and freedom of speech for all.

In closing this post I would like to add a link to the song - Mothers of the Disappeared by U2 from their 1986/87 album; Joshua Tree (recently remastered and with bonus tracks; U2 - Joshua Tree - Deluxe Edition scheduled release date; 26th May, 2008). This particular video clip acknowledges the Madres de Plaza de Mayo and the Disappeared victims of Argentina. Mothers of the Disappeared is the closing track on Joshua Tree and was how I first became interested in the work of Amnesty International while living and working in London in 1987 to the present day.

Hunger 2008. Film Directed by Steve McQueen.

HUNGER 2008
This article by Louis P. Burns aka Lugh © 2008. All rights reserved.

  • There is a new film being screened at Cannes Film Festival this year called; Hunger. It is the story of the last few days and weeks of Irish Republican Hunger Striker Bobby Sands played by German/Irish actor Michael Fastbender.

Steve McQueen who directed Hunger recalls (in an interview with the BBC) his early days growing up and how Bobby Sands became engrained on his memory and how he wanted to portray the realities of the Irish Republican / Nationalist Hunger Strikers. Hunger is being tipped for the prestigious award of Camera D'Or at this year's festival and it is believed it will cause quite a controversy when it goes on general release because of the nature of its sometimes brutal and unreserved storyline. To learn more about the Sands film premiere at Cannes and to watch an interview with the director; Steve McQueen about Hunger. Go to the BBC NEWS / Entertainment link directly beneath this paragraph:

You can read an indepth review by David McKittrick of the film - Hunger and more about the real Bobby Sands if you follow the next link to the Independent news website:

I'm now concerned that under sweeping changes in British/UK law rushed through today, that I may be guilty of the crime of discrimination towards British service personnel. Am I? Please don't dismiss this out-of-hand. I'm serious. Are the British/UK government, the House of Lords and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) suggesting that if someone finds or picks fault in the armed services they could now either be fined or given a custodial prison sentence?

Isn't that a severe form of censorship and breach of people's freedom of speech. Isn't it also in violation of their liberty under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?

The British/UK government, the Law Lords and the MoD are TAKING LIBERTIES..!

An insane, assasin, ex-police officer on one hand and a stupid clown on the other. He died as he deserved to die. No one, except his wife and children, will shed a tear for him.

The TV channel that put his suicide live on the air was sanctioned for doing so during a 'children protection' time of the day (07:00 to 22:00).

I don't think this could be regarded as undue censorship. The channel could have released the news - commenting it 'in off' - without showing the actual shocking images.

I agree but, couldn't it be contested that all the victims still alive had a right to witness the only justice this parasite would ever truly face? Just my thoughts for what they're worth.

i find it interesting that we can all speak freely about the film, and that google can host it for viewing by the public, but it's a crime to share a link to it. i've watched the film and while i admit it takes a bit of getting used to, there are much more offensive films and clips of media currently online. all that this film does is show another perspective and spin on a theme we've all been brainwashed into accepting as concretely true. while lying politicians stood to make vast fortunes and shape great careers for themselves, supposedly clearing up the mess or healing rifts that developed during the worst of reported times, i can see beyond that to the need to nurture the origins and roots of all sectarianism.

whatever you do, don't share links to; judea declares war on germany. it's very naughty and the government will huff with you...

Positively brilliant

The story serves as a reminder that censorship is occurring on both sides of the warming debate, not just the skeptics.

According to The Seattle Pi, Canada has taken down two websites by The Yes Men, an activist group that had posted fake press releases posing as the Canadian government to try to push the country to action on global warming. However, that was just the start of the snowball -- Canada's takedown effort has killed over 4,500 innocent sites as well.

Re: Defining Censorship...

Post by Louis P. Burns aka Lugh »

The top post on this thread entitled Defining Censorship and post #3 are also featured as part of an ongoing campaign to get some truth out of the three (or four if you include Joanne Chapman / and loads more if you count the sheeple on the Mark Thomas mailing list who also pitched in with insults aimed at me) individuals on the markthomasinfo.com website and forums who specifically targetted me for speaking out about a clip on YouTube of some British soldiers beating kids in Basra, Iraq. I would be grateful to members of Sensitize © if they read the entire piece and viewed all links included which you can find here and then posted their own comments and thoughts about it all below.

Please feel free to say anything you like, as long as you don't slander anyone. Speak your truth though folks. That's always healthy and to be encouraged  ...

------

UPDATE: I have had to post these two recent adjustments to the Defining Censorship pages in the Sensitize e-magazine pages because Simon Brickhill aka Psikottix (a moderator on the markthomasinfo.com) and former member of here has been very busy making several threats against me including threats to kill and orchestrated terrorism. Here are those amendments:
Edit to include an update regarding Mr. Simon Brickhill aka Psikottix (moderator on the http://www.markthomasinfo.com/ website) who is mentioned in the article below which describes some of the cyber-bullying and hate criminality perpetrated towards me by Mr. Brickhill and a few others on the Mark Thomas website and mailing list (screenshots stored) ...

If any of you are unfortunate enough to know Simon Brickhill aka Psikottix and have been linked to this page as a result of reading his lughout.moonfruit.com/# website where he has made several criminal accusations against me, threats to kill against me, calls to others to perpetrate harm (which is orchestrated terrorism incidentally and carries a very heavy penalty under both Irish and UK Law) against me, negative references to my media / music co-collaborators and good friends, stolen a copyrighted image from this domain which was part of the Wishing Well CD I produced for Foyle Hospice in memory of another good friend and community arts activist who is sadly no longer with us. The photograph I refer to includes a renowned recording engineer and lecturer with the North West Institute of Further and Higher Education and he is a totally unconnected individual but is someone whose life Simon may be also placing in jeopardy. Please be advised folks, that I had to report all of this to the Police Service of Northern Ireland on the 19th December, 2009 - Incident Report number 1146. It is all being investigated by Constable. Carr of Strand Road P.S.N.I. Derry (or Londonderry) and his colleagues. They are networking with the Telecommunications Division of the English / UK Police to locate and caution and/or arrest Mr. Simon Brickhill aka Psikottix.

Simon has also referred to a 'paper trail' which he aims to present to the authorities and which he claims may in some way incriminate me. What he is referring to are some emails, some pirated DVD's and about £8.00 worth of cannabis that I sent to him in better times, when he was feeling ill with depression and threatening to kill himself. My thinking at the time was that they would cheer him up and while I admit I have broken the law by pirating DVD's and sending some cannabis through the post to Simon, I have also notified the P.S.N.I. about this as part of my statement and they have advised me that I may recieve a caution. So Simon's attempt to blackmail simply reveals the sort of nasty individual that he is.

Simon has made several adjustments to his pages on the lughout/moonfruit.com/# website over the last month, but I have kept screenshots of them all for the benefit of the P.S.N.I. the UK Police, the courts and anyone else who wants to see who the aggressor and bully has actually been in this situation. You can view those screenshots by clicking the links here. They are an example of some of the hostilities towards me from just one member of the Mark Thomas site (Simon Brickhill aka Psikottix) and mailing list who had a problem with me vocalising my absolute shock and horror at and towards the British army and their brutal treatment of children in Basra, Iraq (which I compared to their illegal activities here in Northern Ireland for several decades) and which you can read more about below.

The upshots of all of this are that I am now recieving treatment for sleeping difficulties. The bi-polar depression which I have lived with my whole life has flared up. An ongoing heart condition has been exacerbated. My Christmas and New Year were ruined. My family and friends have had to listen to me going through several anxiety attacks brought about by all of this in combination with the very real fears associated with living in a city where armed paramilitaries have on many occasions targeted suspected drug dealers and sex offenders. So Simon, if you think any of this has been funny, or a piece of highbrow satirical comedy. Think again, preferably from the safety of a prison cell or under house arrest.

One other thing you may wish to also consider Simon, and it may be unfounded, is that many of your accusations made towards me, may very well be projection in psychological terms. In which case, maybe the authorities, your friends, colleagues, fellow markthomasinfo.com forum members / mailing list subscribers, your CPN and your neighbours should be alerted. Your mind is definitely sick enough to warrant more than a few concerns.

You can contact Simon Brickhill aka Psikottix on: psi.kottix@gmail.com or Twitter him on: http://twitter.com/psikottix although, be advised, he's an ugly little bastard and might make you puke. He's got a face only a blind mother in a rush could love.

Finally, here's a song for and quite probably about Simon Brickhill aka Psikottix. I think it's rather fitting for the lying little prick!

Thank you for your kind attention.

Sincerely. Louis P. Burns aka Lugh - 14th January, 2010 (17.59pm GMT) ...

------------

Further Update: At any time he could show some evidence, like screenshots from the http://www.markthomasinfo.com/ forums where he claims I called anyone a murderer. This paragraph goes out equally to Alan Fisher aka the_leander (although he appears to have slid off like so much runny shit, after starting all of this), and finally Jeff Jenkins aka plucker, the administrator of the; http://www.markthomasinfo.com/ website and forums who can be contacted on; plucker@btinternet.com

Oh yeah, and over on Facebook there's a group called: Soldiers Are Not Heroes (SANH) with over 207,500 members (at the time of writing this - early hours of; 16th January, 2010) including Mark Thomas' pal Brian Haw the Peace Activist and myself of course. Several people there are actually calling British soldiers 'murderers' but I bet the three stooges mentioned directly above haven't got the balls to confront any/all of them! Which only proves them to be a pack of bullies who target individuals. Cowards basically.

Thank you for your kind and continued attention folks.

Sincerely. Louis P. Burns aka Lugh - 16th January, 2010 (01.58am GMT) ...

I will embed the included links later today. I'm exhausted right now. Thank you...

70-year gag on Kelly death evidence
Press Association / guardian.co.uk wrote:Evidence relating to the death of Government weapons inspector David Kelly is to be kept secret for 70 years, it has been reported.

A highly unusual ruling by Lord Hutton, who chaired the inquiry into Dr Kelly's death, means medical records including the post-mortem report will remain classified until after all those with a direct interest in the case are dead, the Mail on Sunday reported.

And a 30-year secrecy order has been placed on written records provided to Lord Hutton's inquiry which were not produced in evidence.

The Ministry of Justice said decisions on the evidence were a matter for Lord Hutton. But Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker, who has conducted his own investigations into Dr Kelly's death, described the order as "astonishing".
