Awake. By Brian Gillespie © 2002.

AWAKE.
By Brian Gillespie © 2002. All Rights Reserved.
  • James Joyce sat
    with
    two leeches
    on his
    eyes
    and a pen
    in
    his hand
    while
    he listened
    to
    the song of an
    old
    washerwomen
    who
    dipped her
    rags
    in the river
    of mud;
    and
    James Joyce smiled,
    and wrote.

This is a poem and ode to James Joyce, written by my colleague and friend, Brian Gillespie. Brian is not an active member of Sensitize (yet), due to work commitments and has very little free time. He works on a voluntary capacity with the rest of us at Upstate Renegade Productions as a script consultant and production co-ordinator. He is a fine writer too and I hope he joins and uploads some more of his work to here in the future.

BTW, Brian did give me permission to share this piece with you all via Sensitize :) ...

Nice one Brian.

Excellent poem. "The best words, in the best possible order" was someone's definition of poetry (wish I could remember who). That's what Brian's done here. A few words, carefully chosen, creating an astonishingly vivid picture as well as telling a story and taking the emotions of the reader through mild revulsion at the idea of the leeches all the way to the inevitable smile at the end.

I hope Brian joins. No pressure, but, Lugh... give him a gentle nudge now and again, will you? I'd love to read more of his words.

Excellent Piece

I had a vauge memory of this poem as I am friendly with Brian and the opening lines always stuck in my head
On reading it again I really love the line about the washerwoman dipping her rags in a river of mud. seems like a Herculean task, to clean rags by dipping them in mud.
But someones gotta do it
