One for danimik and delph_ambi here me thinks. I took this picture earlier this evening. If it inspires a poem or piece of prose, it would be brilliant if you guys joined in on here. We could put it into the Sensitize e-zine as a collaborative project when that side of things comes about. Wotcha reckon?

Very warm and peaceful day and night here. Chilled out and happy 8) ...

Don't know if it really fits, but here's one, hot off the press. :)

UP RIVER

heading inland, up river
leaving...

leaving
smoke blackened calumny
rank ogres tower blocks
round the clock fights
all night killing lost time
spending life spent and left
in the mire of this city

heading inland
up river to mist hills blue forests
where once the saint spoke with angels
fleet angels flow river fast flow past the angels
leaving the saint far behind

leave An Feabhail and head for mountains
where blue greens the silvery source
seek the stream that takes you beneath
watch as waves catch you
turn you into a slippery thing
that slides between water white water
slip through churning foam slipslipslip
sink deep sink down become fish become eel stream thing
swim laugh breathe swimswimswim...

heading inland, up river

Feedback for Delph on her poem; Up River...

Post by Louis P. Burns aka Lugh »

Yip :D

That works for me Delph. I love the way you have included the An Feabhail (Estuary of the lip). You also mention angels and saints. We're no angels  but there is a long heritage link to Colmcille (Dove of the Church) / St. Columba whose disciples went on to write the Book of Kells. The 'cille' bit of Colmcille is pronounced 'keel', not seel/ceel which many backpackers and tourists have assumed. Easy mistake I guess...

Derry/Londonderry, my hometown is also known as Doire Colmcille (Doire pronounced durrugh ~ roughly lol). Colmcille / St. Columba founded his first monastery here in 546AD. Recently, there have been a few plans to have some sort of giant statue of Colmcille either in the middle of the river or on its' bank so that anyone visiting the city can see it. I personally think that's a daft idea, but tourism being what tourism is, it will probably come to pass (sigh).

You're also bang-on-the-nose about eels. Slippery lil feckers. The River Foyle is where salmon come to spawn after swimming the Atlantic Ocean from Canada. Sea trout are also a common fish here. As a lad, I fished the River Foyle, always hopeful of catching a salmon. No chance! Dip yer line in the Foyle and if you don't catch a condom or Wellington boot, you'll definitely catch an eel. We used to give them to an old geezer called Willie McCloskey who would slice and fry them up for his dogs. He also ate them himself. Flukes, or flounders - a kind of plaice are also pretty abundant in the River Foyle although it's a brave person who eats them  ...

The Foyle is a tidal river and this means we have loads of other marine life. This is thankfully because the river has been allowed to clean up and there are a lot of activists and campaigners here who protect the wildlife. We even get porpoises and seals right up here in the city and I have seen them many times. In 1978 (I think) we had a killer whale which we nicknamed Dopey Dick. Poor animal got trapped, ate all the fish, got distressed and eventually beached him/herself at Portrush (I may be wrong on this point. Many like to believe Dopey Dick made it back to the pod and open ocean). There are herons and seagulls aplenty too...

^ Oh gawd look. I've gone on and on and on  ... I really must install a shepherd's staff complete with hook that comes onstage when I'm waffling and roughly pokes me in the ribs or grabs me into the wings. I could suggest you complain to management about all this text, but that's me and I refuse to fire myself, especially on a Sunday, so there. Nyer :P ...

I will link Diarmuid to your poem in this thread and we will get back to you within the next few days to keep you updated. As far as I am concerned, this is a winner and will become part of our first edition of Sensitize :) ...

Oh yeah. I sent you a private message on Friday and an email today. There's no rush to answer them but could you take a gander at them please? We'll also be in touch with both Mike and yourself to chin-wag about creating proper passports/avatars for you guys. That also goes for all other active members on here...

Nice one Delph. Thanks mate :D ...

Thanks for the entertaining reply, Lugh!

I read somewhere that Columba heard angels singing in the oakland ('doire') - hence the name of the city. Thought it was a nice idea, so that's why it's included. However, he buggered off to Scotland after that, which is why I've got the angels showing no further interest in the saint, but being more interested in their river.

Here's a slightly revised version. Only difference is a couple of added lines to suggest more strongly that the escape at the start of the poem turns into a homecoming by the end.

UP RIVER

heading inland, up river
beyond the flood
leaving...

leaving
smoke blackened calumny
rank ogres tower blocks
round the clock fights
all night killing lost time
spending life spent and left
in the mire of this city

heading inland
up river to mist hills blue forests
where once the saint spoke with angels
fleet angels flow river fast flow past the angels
leaving the saint far behind

leave An Feabhail and head for mountains
where blue greens the silvery source
seek the stream that takes you beneath
watch as waves catch you
turn you into a slippery thing
that slides between water white water
slip through churning foam slipslipslip
sink deep sink down become fish become eel stream thing
swim laugh breathe swimswimswim...

heading inland, up river
into the flood

Hi Delph :)

You're probably gonna email me a slap in the teeth for this, but I meant to say in yesterday's feedback that the second stanza - third line;

"rank ogres tower blocks"

may throw some people. There are several apartment blocks in Derry. I'm scheduled to move out of one and into a bungalow soon but, they aren't really tower blocks. This one for instance is only seven storeys high. Perhaps;

'apartment blocks, ogres'

would be more fitting. It's just a suggestion and in no way meant as a criticism.

I found this pretty cool: By adding lines and rounding off your piece to capture the departure and homecoming you have achieved something really rather wonderful, in that; Derry is a city populated by people who have travelled out, only to return years later. Our sense of humour. Our moodiness. Lol, our diet and musical tastes beckon many of us home all throughout our journeys. We're homebirds at heart. You have caught this superbly and I'd say it's safe to assume many Derry folk would warm to this quality of the poem immediately.

There is a school here called Oakgrove. Actually, I think it's an area of Derry. The city was once honoured or acknowledged as Oakgrove and a proposition to have the name changed to Oakgrove went through local council. Derry is also known as the Maiden City. These were names that were discussed during our troubled times when there was a lot of sectarian strife over whether it be called Derry or Londonderry. Gerry Anderson, local and national radio and TV personality (bloody good geezer 'n' all) once called it Stroke City live on BBC Radio Foyle, in a bid to end hostilities. That too has stuck.

So there ya go. Derry, Doire, Doire Colmcille, Londonderry, Maiden City, Oakgrove or Stroke City. Is it any wonder I'm completely bonkers..? No-one here can make their flippin' mind up :P ..!

You're quite right about the buildings, of course. Call it poetic license. Thanks for the suggestion, but the line has to stay as it is for the rhythm. I was thinking of those buildings with the giant murals on the sides. They're not exactly skyscrapers, true, so maybe you can persuade the city planners to build some taller buildings for the sake of the poem...

I wish to feck Catherine was still posting to Sensitize and that we hadn't fallen out. Not only do I miss her immensely, she'd be rolling in the aisles with laughter on here right now. Some sneaky gits have only gone and built apartment towers and there's a foot-bridge being built across the River Foyle (right in the heart of the city.

There's also a new state-of-the-art tower of study rooms with a stairwell of clear glass sides being built directly across the Strand Road from the oldest annex of the NWIFHE technical college. Both of these buildings (old and new) are being connected by a long glass encased walkway that spans the breadth of the Strand Road. I have every intention of visiting this site at some time after it opens to capture shots of Derry City at work, rest and play 24/7 8) ...

Catherine, if you're still reading Sensitize. I am sorry for my part in our little war.

It is over. Please come home :) ...
