IN SHANE'S WAKE.
A gallows humour piece by Louis P. Burns aka Lugh. December 8th and 9th, 2023.

Y'know when they carried Shane MacGowan's coffin out of that chapel in Nenagh, Tipperary and loaded it into the hearse yesterday evening? Then family and friends climbed into a few other black cars before being escorted by Garda onwards to his burial. Did you notice how dark it was? I'm wondering if they buried him in the night time? That'd be fuckin' mad if they did, and then this morning were awakened in their respective hotels and guest houses by those same Garda banging on their doors. Them all hungover and dehydrated, stood there trying to recall events from the night before. Then that look of half horror / half laughter when they do, and recount their actions:

'Well, it's like this Guard. We were all blootered and ripped on acid and poteen by the time we got to the graveyard. Then some smartarse shouted; 'We need to dig his grave still!' So, we did, and off we all went, shovels in hand and dug 40 separate holes to put him in. Fuckin' mad eh? Wha? That's why there are now 39 newly dug graves available, and one filled with Shane's wicker basket coffin, upside-down and partially open in the other grave. Sorry about that. If there are criminal proceedings I will gladly take my oil. Best funeral I've ever been to, and that's no lie sir I tell ye! Shane would've pissed himself laughing if he'd seen it.'

Then I heard this morning that he'd been cremated. So that fucked that wee sketch idea right up!
