  • Raise your voice in anger
    Tell the world it's wrong
    Wave your mighty banners
    Tonight, you are strong
    Hear all the people singing
    Singing out loud
    Singing songs that overcome
    In one voice.
    Voice of the crowd.

    In lone protests we're singing
    Against SOCPA we're singing
    To Downing Street and Westminster
    Our anger is ringing
    Revolution is bringing
    Changes tonight
    Changes tonight...

Some can't say what they want
    Through fear of being killed
    So we agitate the system
That allows their blood to be spilled
    Hear all the people singing
    Singing out loud
    Singing songs that overcome
    In one voice.
    Voice of the crowd.

    Against Washington we're singing
    The Iraqi War we're singing
At George Bush and Tony Blair
    Our anger is ringing
    Revolution is bringing
    Changes tonight
    Changes tonight...

Voice Of The Crowd
Song in the key of E by Louis P. Burns aka Lugh © 1987. All Rights Reserved.

raise your voice in anger
tell the world it's wrong
wave your mighty banner
tonight you are strong

just

hear the people singing
singing out loud
singing songs of freedom
in one voice
voice of the crowd

in south africa they're singing
in ireland they're singing
san salvador
the phillipines
the anger is ringing
revolution is bringing
changes tonight
changes tonight

when you can't say what you want
through fear of being killed
but want more from the system
without seeing more blood spilled

just

hear the people singing
singing out loud
singing songs of freedom
in one voice
voice of the crowd

in toxteth they're singing
in brixton they're singing
china
the eastern block
the anger is ringing
revolution is bringing
changes tonight
changes tonight

These are the lyrics to an old song I wrote years ago while living and working in the Eastend of London and playing in a band called Famous Blue Raincoat.

The 80's were a time of real gut-felt rage at the British Government. In Ireland this stemmed from the continued and ridiculous military presence of the British Army. In England people were rightfully bitter about the Miner's Strike and the heavy-handed and racist policing of ethnic communities (Brixton and Toxteth). Somethings never change eh?

Globally, there had been mass student riots in Tiananmen Square, China and Eastern / Western Germany was still divided by the Berlin Wall. San Salvador and the Phillipines were frequently in the news due to human rights breaches and there seemed to be nothing but anger in the air all around.

I know Voice of the Crowd is a bit dated now. I have on a few occasions dipped into it and tried to bring it up to date but I've never been happy with the rewrites. Maybe having it up here on the Sensitize boards will prompt me to pay attention to the news and develop it for today's world.*
